Oh the power of Facebook! The club was set up after my previous experiences as an RE Veteran.
Some 6 years ago after networking on Facebook and Royal Engineers groups, I attended my first Sapperfest...In a field...with a tent....with 500 other Sappers all weekend. You can imagine the social element of all these veterans coming together after all the years. Well it was through these groups that i'd spoken to Del Hardman RE (the Sapper who started the first ever club in Hull) at Sapperfest 14. He told me about his breakfast club and how it attracted all types, so I thought this is a good idea, i'll look in to it when back home. Well, 6 months later, I started looking at the brekkie club website map on www.afvbc.net and found the nearest one was Bromsgrove which was too far. So I decided to set one up in Worcester at the Postal Order, knowing it was central and the pub chain are well known for their well priced food and drink. So after printing posters, contacting the press and setting up a facebook page, the first club took place on Saturday the 5th of September 2015 with about 10 veterans ranging from Sigs, Tankies and Grease Monkeys (mechanics to most people)...............
December sees us raise a glass to absent friends in the previous month and now we look forward to Christmas with loved ones. Please can we stay in contact and support many veterans that may be on their own at this time.
Also, don't forget we'll be holding a raffle with many prizes to raise funds to pay for the meats and some trimmings for the Maggs Day Centre which will feed many on the streets with a lovely Christmas morning breakfast. We also hope to raise a few bob for the Salvation Army to again provide them with some food to feed those that have fallen on hard times.
Don't forget we have clubs nearby that meet as well. Tewkesbury on the 2nd Saturday of the month and Malvern on the 3rd Saturday and Kidderminster every week. Tewks and Malvern are in their respective Wetherspoons and both start at 9.30am and Kiddy are in the Larch Wood Farm pub at 9.30am.
Don't forget that we still have the Stepway charity providing providing support for Worcestershire Veterans during the Corona Virus crisis. We have mentors and case workers in daily contact with a number of individuals checking on their health and well being. We continue to provide a virtual drop in centre on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 1100 and 1200 by Skpe. If you have served in any of the services and would like to join in for a chat then PM stepway for a link. To date we have provided and delivered just over 50 meals to ex serving personnel in the Worcestershire area. If you are in difficulty and need assistance then please call: 07930657568 or click on the picture below to jump straight to the webpage for further information......
We will continue to involve everyone that attends. We have now joined up with the Council Covenant Champion (Chris Mitchell on the left) along with the local Worcester City British Legion, the Woofers Regiment and SSAFA. All together, we're coming together as a big Veteran family to support each other as and when needed....Re-elected Worcester MP, Robin Walker (middle pic) joined us this month (June 2017)
Happy 5th birthday to all of the members!
